VICTORIA – The Green party will not run a candidate against NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in the riding of Burnaby South.Green Leader Elizabeth May says the decision is an extension of a “leader’s courtesy,” a long-standing Canadian parliamentary tradition that facilitates a newly elected party leader’s entry to the House of Commons in an unopposed byelection. She says in a statement the Greens believe it is right to step aside to allow the leader of “an important part of the political spectrum” to serve in Parliament.Singh announced his candidacy for the federal riding after New Democrat MP Kennedy Stewart indicated he was stepping aside to run for mayor of Vancouver. The Liberal and Conservative parties have not announced candidates in the riding, but the Liberals have said they will contest the byelection.May received the leader’s courtesy in 2008 when then-Liberal leader Stephane Dion chose not to run a candidate against her in Central Nova. She extended the same gesture to Dion.In 2002, the Liberals and Conservatives stepped aside for Stephen Harper when he ran in a byelection held shortly after he became leader of the Canadian Alliance. No date has been set for a byelection.Singh sat in Ontario’s legislature and served as the provincial NDP’s deputy leader before he replaced Tom Mulcair as the federal leader.

Calling it a “unique basis” for further talks, the United Nations Security Council today gave its full support to Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s plan for an overall political settlement on Cyprus and urged all concerned to use the blueprint in their negotiations on reaching a comprehensive solution within the framework of Mr. Annan’s “Good Offices.” In a unanimously adopted resolution, the Council commended the Secretary-General for taking the initiative to present to the parties a comprehensive settlement plan aimed at bridging the gaps between them, and backed the “carefully balanced plan” of 26 February 2003. The Council also voiced regret that due to the “negative approach” of the Turkish Cypriot leader it was not possible to reach agreement to put the plan to simultaneous referenda, thus precluding the opportunity for the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots to decide for themselves on a plan that would have permitted the reunification of Cyprus. As result it would not be possible to achieve a comprehensive settlement before 16 April, the date Cyprus’s accession treaty to the European Union is to be signed. Last month, the Secretary-General met with the Greek Cypriot leader, Tassos Papadopoulos, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, in The Hague in a failed bid to gain their approval of his proposals. In a report released to the Council last week, the Secretary-General said that Mr. Denktash “bears prime responsibility” for the failure of this latest UN effort to resolve the decades-long problem. “Except for a very few instances, Mr. Denktash by and large declined to engage in negotiation on the basis of give and take,” Mr. Annan wrote. “This greatly complicated my efforts to accommodate not only the legitimate concerns of principle but also the concrete and practical interests of the Turkish Cypriots.” In the report, the Secretary-General says his plan to enable a united Cyprus to join the EU remains on the table, but notes that he will not undertake any new initiatives to reach a deal until he sees that the political will necessary for a successful outcome exists. Commending the “extraordinary effort” of the Secretary-General, his Special Advisor, Alvaro de Soto and his team, since 1999, the Council today asked Mr. Annan to continue to make available his Good Offices for Cyprus.
Continuing its campaign to defend press freedom in the face of political or criminal attacks, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today condemned the murder of yet another journalist, a reporter from the Dominican Republic gunned down just after completing a broadcast on a provincial crime wave. Juan Andújar, a correspondent with the Santo Domingo-based daily Listín Diario, was shot dead after a radio broadcast on a crime wave that has shaken the southern town of Azua. “By taking a stand against the gangs waging terror, Juan Andújar was carrying out his duty as a journalist and a citizen,” UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura said. “Juan Andújar breached the silence, and we in turn must speak out. His killers must not benefit from our silence. “A journalist did not want criminal acts to go unpunished and we must not allow the worst of crimes – the murder of this journalist – to go unpunished,” he added, calling for everything possible to be done to bring those responsible to justice. Mr. Matsuura’s condemnation was just the latest of many he has issued so far this year on the murder of journalists around the world.

The iPad 2 is coming–we (think we) know that much. Images of cases from third party accessory designers have been popping up a bit over the past couple of weeks, seemingly confirming this all but certain fact. Over the past week, Apple fansite 9to5 Mac managed to get its hands on case mold drawings from an unnamed company described only as “an Asian case supplier.”The site was asked to “not so nicely” pull the drawings from its site, seeing as how they are someone else’s property–someone who, seemingly, could get into a lot of hot water if the source were traced back. 9to5 Mac complied. What we do know from the drawing is the iPad 2 (assuming, of course, that these are accurate) will have a tapered back, are a rear camera. There’s also a new port on the device, which is assumed to either be an SD card slot or either a mini- or standard USB port.

In an effort to revamp the traditional online banner ad, the Online Publishers Association has unveiled a new set of display advertising units it hopes will stimulate more creativity with ads and better engage users online. The new units include: a fixed panel (recommended dimension 336 pixels wide x 860 pixels tall), which looks naturally embedded into the page layout; a “XXL Box” (468 x 648), which has page-turn functionality with video capability; and “Pushdown” (970 x 418), which opens to display the advertisement and then rolls up to the top of the page.“As consumers and advertisers increasingly turn to digital media, we must create formats and programs that support and sustain the differentiating aspects of our businesses,” Martin A. Nisenholtz, OPA founding chairman and New York Times senior vice president of digital, said in a statement.OPA member-publishers that have signed on include Time Inc., BusinessWeek, Condé Nast Digital, ESPN, IDG, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Meredith Interactive and Reed Business Information. They have committed to offer at least one of the three new ad units by July 1.
Events remain the industry’s most successful product, accounting for over 43 percent of annual revenues. However, the sector only saw a 2 percent gain, up to $6.38 billion in the first half of 2016, from $6.26 billion during the same period in 2015. In 2015, events accounted for 44.4 percent of total industry revenues, up 4.5 percent from $5.99 billion in the first half of 2014. Digital ads saw gains of 7.9 percent, up to $3.8 billion in the first half of 2016 from $3.52 billion during the same period in 2015. While digital ads are growing far more than events or print ads (which are in decline), this is the first time digital ad growth isn’t in the double digits, according to the report. Digital ads accounted for just $2.72 billion in the first-half of 2014, leading to a 29.4 percent bump the first half of 2015. Similarly, data services are up by 10 percent, from $1.47 billion in the first half of 2015 to $1.61 billion in the first half of 2016. Data services brought in $1.36 billion in the first half of 2014. This rising sector is expected to soon be competitive with events as a top revenue source, according to industry predictions in Connectiv’s 2015 Business Information Survey. Finally, print revenues are down 7.1 percent year-over-year, from $3.13 billion in the first half of 2015, to $2.91 billion in the first half of 2016. This is compared to a decrease in print revenues of 5.6 percent between the first of half 2015 and the first half of 2014, when print ads brought in $3.37 billion. The B2B media and information industry has seen gains of just 2.7 percent year-over-year for the first half of 2016, Connectiv reports. This is the same overall increase observed in 2015, though slowed compared to the 4 percent year-over-year bump in the first half of last year.
Salman Khan and Kapil Sharma.InstagramIt’s that time of the week again when we bring to you the report on who won, who lost, who struggled and who fared well in the race of viewership last week. With many surprising entries and exits in the top five chart, let’s take a look at the surprising TRP report this week.As per a Pinkvilla report, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, which grabbed headline for the exit of Hina Khan (Komolika) from the show, has not been featured in the top five this week. Which comes as a big surprise since the show had maintained its spot in the top five throughout its run so far. Even last week, the show had grabbed fourth position in the chart. However, the entry of Mr Bajaj played by Karan Singh Grover, might bring it back to the top five next week. While Ekta Kapoor’s Kundali Bhagya has grabbed the top spot, its Kumkum Bhagya that has secured the second position in the list. Super Dancer, which was at the second spot last week has dropped down by a point and is at the third spot this week. The Kapil Sharma Show, which saw Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan in the previous episode has bagged the fourth position. There is no doubt about the fact that Katrina and Salman’s episode was not only entertaining but also was the episode of many revelations; which is why the show must have seen a jump. The fifth position has been held by Tujhse Hai Raabta. For the fans of Kapil Sharma, there has been a big news. The comedy king would soon turn father and Ginni Chatrath and Kapil are expecting their first child together. Ever since the word got out, celebs have been teasing the comedian on the show about the same.
Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. The Federal Bureau of Investigation warned U.S. businesses that hackers have used malicious software to launch a destructive cyberattack in the United States, following a devastating breach last week at Sony Pictures Entertainment.Cybersecurity experts said the malicious software described in the alert appeared to describe the one that affected Sony, which would mark first major destructive cyber attack waged against a company on U.S. soil. Such attacks have been launched in Asia and the Middle East, but none have been reported in the United States. The FBI report did not say how many companies had been victims of destructive attacks.”I believe the coordinated cyberattack with destructive payloads against a corporation in the U.S. represents a watershed event,” said Tom Kellermann, chief cybersecurity officer with security software maker Trend Micro Inc. “Geopolitics now serve as harbingers for destructive cyberattacks.”The five-page, confidential “flash” FBI warning issued to businesses late on Monday provided some technical details about the malicious software used in the attack. It provided advice on how to respond to the malware and asked businesses to contact the FBI if they identified similar malware. The report said the malware overrides all data on hard drives of computers, including the master boot record, which prevents them from booting up.”The overwriting of the data files will make it extremely difficult and costly, if not impossible, to recover the data using standard forensic methods,” the report said. The document was sent to security staff at some U.S. companies in an email that asked them not to share the information. The FBI released the document in the wake of last Monday’s unprecedented attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, which brought corporate email down for a week and crippled other systems as the company prepares to release several highly anticipated films during the crucial holiday film season.A Sony spokeswoman said the company had “restored a number of important services” and was “working closely with law enforcement officials to investigate the matter.”She declined to comment on the FBI warning. The FBI said it is investigating the attack with help from the Department of Homeland Security. Sony has hired FireEye Inc’s Mandiant incident response team to help clean up after the attack, a move that experts say indicates the severity of the breach. While the FBI report did not name the victim of the destructive attack in its bulletin, two cybersecurity experts who reviewed the document said it was clearly referring to the breach at the California-based unit of Sony Corp.”This correlates with information about that many of us in the security industry have been tracking,” said one of the people who reviewed the document. “It looks exactly like information from the Sony attack.”FBI spokesman Joshua Campbell declined comment when asked if the software had been used against the California-based unit of Sony Corp, although he confirmed that the agency had issued the confidential “flash” warning, which Reuters independently obtained.”The FBI routinely advises private industry of various cyber threat indicators observed during the course of our investigations,” he said. “This data is provided in order to help systems administrators guard against the actions of persistent cyber criminals.”The FBI typically does not identify victims of attacks in those reports.Hackers used malware similar to that described in the FBI report to launch attacks on businesses in highly destructive attacks in South Korea and the Middle East, including one against oil producer Saudi Aramco that knocked out some 30,000 computers. Those attacks are widely believed to have been launched by hackers working on behalf of the governments of North Korea and Iran.Security experts said that repairing the computers requires technicians to manually either replace the hard drives on each computer, or re-image them, a time-consuming and expensive process.Monday’s FBI report said the attackers were “unknown.”Yet the technology news site Re/code reported that Sony was investigating to determine whether hackers working on behalf of North Korea were responsible for the attack as retribution for the company’s backing of the film “The Interview.”The movie, which is due to be released in the United States and Canada on Dec. 25, is a comedy about two journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The Pyongyang government denounced the film as “undisguised sponsoring of terrorism, as well as an act of war” in a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in June. The technical section of the FBI report said some of the software used by the hackers had been compiled in Korean, but it did not discuss any possible connection to North Korea.(Reporting by Jim Finkle. The falling Australian dollar (AUD) hasn’t dampened Australians’ love for Hawai’i, with latest figures revealing a third consecutive record-breaking year for Aussies visiting the island destination.According to preliminary year-end statistics released by the Hawai’i Tourism Authority, 333,998 Australians visited the Hawaiian Islands in 2015, an increase of 7.8% on 2014.Hawai’i Tourism Oceania (HTO) Australia Country Manager, Kerri Anderson, said considering the substantial drop in the value of the Australian dollar in 2015, the results were a testament to the ongoing love Australians had for Hawai’i.“Australia is Hawai’i’s third largest international market, which is quite astounding given our population size compared to other markets,” Ms Anderson said.“Australians go back to Hawai’i again and again, with more than 45 percent of visitors on at least their second trip so it’s heartening to see that the declining AUD hasn’t deterred them from choosing a Hawai’i holiday.”Length of stay was up two percent in 2015, with Australians staying an average 9.53 days in the destination. Expenditure was up by a marginal 1.7% to $802.26 million USD however overall per person trip spending was down 5.6 percent – an indication that the falling exchange rate had an impact on how much visitors spent rather than their decision to travel to the Hawaiian Islands.Ms Anderson said one of the biggest growth areas was the number of Australians visiting the islands as part of the highly lucrative meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) market – with a 44 percent increase in the number people visiting Hawai’i for business purposes such as conferences or corporate meetings. While hotels remained the primary accommodation choice for Australians visiting in 2015, there was a 34 percent increase in choice of condos and a large growth in alternative options such as rental homes and bed and breakfast properties.Almost a third of Australians also looked beyond O‘ahu for holiday experiences and visited a neighbour island, with Maui the second most popular, hosting more than 61,000 Australians in 2015.“One of HTO’s key objectives for 2015 was to communicate that Hawai‘i has so much more to offer beyond the expectation of sun, sand and sea that we do so well,” Ms Anderson said.“We showcased the depth and breadth of experiences across the neighbour islands by highlighting the dramatic geographical diversity, and also the great food, culture, history and range of experiences on each island. This messaging was evident in our in market activities from consumer campaigns to trade and PR activities.”With Australians being avid sports fans and keen competitors, HTO also continue to promote key sporting events such as half and full marathons, triathlons and ocean swimming events, as well as professional sporting events such as surfing, PGA golf tournaments and ironman world championships.“No doubt this is why we have seen a 44 percent increase in visitors attending or taking part in a sporting event in Hawai’i, and this is on top of significant growth over the last two years,” Ms Anderson said.Ms Anderson attributed this third consecutive record-breaking year for Australians travelling to Hawai’i to a number of additional factors including the increase in air seats from both Sydney and Brisbane. As a result of the increased competition on the route, airfare prices were highly competitive, particularly during the second half of 2015. Full report hereSource = Hawai‘i Tourism Oceania
