At the European Coffee Symposium held in London recently, Paul Ettinger, head of international food and beverages at Caffè Nero, said Britain’s coffee shop sector needs to look at new ways of minimising the impact of the recession, including attracting more evening trade, selling more iced drinks and, possibly, selling alcohol.Ettinger said it had taken time to become comfortable and get the premium Italian-style brand right. “What works in London does not necessarily work elsewhere,” he said.Ettinger also said the reasons for Caffè Nero’s success were that they stuck to their business model 100%, including creating partnerships with suppliers as opposed to adversarial relationships, having an open-door policy, so any staff can talk to top management, creating an entrepreneurial spirit, but also making work fun. “People don’t just come to work to make money, but to have fun.”He added that no-one in the company had big offices, boardrooms or company cars. And where else should meetings take place than in a coffee bar?The food offering is a key element of the company’s success. Ettinger added: “I present baked food to the rest of the board each week. It’s at the heart of Caffè Nero.”Chairman and founder Gerry Ford told delegates that a major part of the coffee retailer’s success was also due to the fact that it had never got into high rents, despite what its competitors were doing. “That means we have to be disciplined and sometimes have to opt for secondary sites with a smaller footprint,” he said.”High rents will become even more important in the current climate. If margins go down, due to decreasing sales, and your rent is not too high, you can still do OK.”Ford added: “We have never closed any stores, so I believe it is all about getting the property choice right from the very beginning.” And he spelt out five key success factors for coffee shops in order: coffee, food, business model, people and culture.== Internationally local ==In Dubai, where Caffè Nero is opening its first shop, largely with expats in mind, it is sour-cing local ingredients and local bakers to make its paninis, Viennoiserie and grab-and-go offering. The company’s coffee will still come from the UK via its supplier, Coburgs.Turkey, with 11 shops, is another country where the company is expanding. Caffè Nero Group, founded in 1997, is currently the largest independent coffee retailer in the UK, with over 360 stores from Brighton to Glasgow. In addressing the symposium, organised by Allegra Strategies, Vicki Fuller, head of McDonald’s’ McCafé’s format, prolific in Germany, said the company had over 800 cafés in Europe and was aiming for 1,000 in total, but stated that there are no current plans to establish the McCafé chain in the UK.== Freshness and purity ==Other speakers at the symposium included Paul Passmore, strategy director of SSP in the food travel sector, who said that the company had outlets in 130 international airports and 270 UK stations. Best-known names include Caffè Ritazza, Upper Crust, Burger King and Millies Cookies. He told delegates that while health, well-being and convenience still topped consumer trends in research, health actually dropped down in reality compared with flavour, purity of ingredients and freshness as being the real drivers.Recession-wise, Passmore said: “We are in uncharted territories. China has 97 airports in the pipeline, but some airlines will not make a profit this year and we have seen others go under. Also, it is more important these days to think about mindset rather than nationality. That is what helps you target your audience.”Philippe Sanchez, MD of Starbucks in France – the land of 47,000 cafés – said: “When we set up in France, we set out not to compete ’with coffee’ but ’for people’ and to create an environment where they feel safe and welcome. Most of our customers are women and we aim to give everyone ’a daily inspiration’ – in other words, an armchair if they wish, a brand and a welcome.”Sanchez said: “It was this aspect of ’service’ that we had to get across to our French staff.”He told British Baker that the French loved cheesecake, because it is not normally served in France, where cheese itself is revered. However French customers discovered they really liked it.Murray Leslie, of Gala Coffee, said the company is the fourth-largest roaster in Britain with companies such as Greggs and First Choice Coffee on its client list. He said the company had built a strong relationship with clients, helped by its ethical approach of working with Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance coffee suppliers.Nestlé Professional MD David Field put the case for soluble coffee, which can still deliver great taste in a very short time without a barista. Customers, he believes, should be offered a choice because soluble coffee is still very popular with many customers in a number of environments.== Smaller footprint ==Elaine Higginson, of First Choice coffee equipment, works with leading food retailers and providers where coffee is a major choice. Supplying 24 outlets in a half-mile area of London the company offers bean-to-cup equipment ranging from grinders to brewing machines. The latest trend, she said, was for smaller footprints and reduced cleaning.Jeffrey Young, of Allegra Strategies, said the main concerns of retailers were high rents and rising food costs. Asked what makes a successful shop, he answered that consumers had cited location 51%, coffee quality 50%, service 27% and atmosphere 27%, while 13% (ninth out of 10 on the list) said an exciting and innovative food menu.Tony Waters, of Solo Cup Europe, said a cup is an advertisement for anyone’s business. But as well as carrying the name, his company had come up with the unspillable lid, compostable coatings and cups plus a smoothie blender, which enable users only to rinse the blades, not clean the whole machine between servings.During symposium breaks Dawn Foods provided muffins and cupola cakes, which it also supplies to customers including SSP, McDonald’s and Delice de France. Dave Roberts, Dawn’s national accounts controller, said: “We are an own-label manufacturer and focus on added-value and good ingredients.” He said customers could choose between reduced-fat blueberry muffins or the low-fat version with less than 3% fat. A popular flavour at the moment was apricot and raspberry, he added.—-=== Branded coffee chains, UK ===Number of outlets April 2007 to October 2008Brand April October Units added Annualised 2007 2008 Apr 2007 growth to Oct 2008 Apr 2007 Coffee-focused café retailers to Oct 2008Costa Coffee 555 800 245 29.4%Starbucks 540 700 160 19.8%Caffè Nero 305 388 83 18.1%Caffè Ritazza 170 170 0 0.0%BB’s Coffee & Muffins 140 168 28 13.3%Other players 528 578 50 6.3%Total coffee-focused segment 2,238 2,804 566 16.9%Bakery café retailersPret A Manger 158 193 35 14.8%O’Briens 133 126 -7 -3.5%Bakers Oven 95 105 10 7.0%EAT 65 92 27 27.7%Druckers 42 40 -2 -3.2%Other players 189 216 27 9.5%Total food-focused segment 682 773 90 8.9%Total branded chain market 2,920 3,577 657 15.0%Source: Allegra Strategies – UK Coffee Shop Market, October 2008

The chassis was severely damaged, the tyres burst and the lights broken. The Police have launched an investigation into the accident. Both vehicles were towed to the Ruimveldt Police Station as investigations continue.

Victory on Saturday would see Spurs win four consecutive top-flight matches against the Foxes for the first time. Leicester have scored 44 Premier League goals versus Tottenham, more than against any other side, while their tally of 10 wins is a joint-high.Leicester full-back Ben Chilwell is expected to be available despite a minor fitness issue this week. Midfielder Matty James continues his recovery from Achilles surgery and is the Foxes’ only reported absentee.Tottenham full-backs Serge Aurier and Danny Rose could return after being rested against Olympiakos, but Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon remain out. Son Heung-min is likely to start after beginning on the bench in midweek.Spurs are winless in their last eight Premier League away games (D2, L6), their worst run since a 10-game streak in 2006. They won 11 of their opening 13 league matches on the road last season but lost the remaining six, and have drawn twice in the current campaign (at Manchester City and Arsenal). Tottenham have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 away league games. Spurs could win back-to-back top-flight matches for the first time since April. This will be Mauricio Pochettino’s 250th Premier League match as a manager (W131, D58, L60). The Argentine will become the first non-European to reach this landmark. Harry Kane has scored 13 goals in 12 games in all competitions versus Leicester (including one goal while on loan at Millwall), more than against any other side.Burnley vs Norwich CityTurf Moor, BurnleySaturday, 21-09-2019 @5pmReferee: David CooteBurnley manager Sean Dyche will make a late decision on whether to include Johann Berg Gudmundsson after his calf injury. However, Danny Drinkwater is not yet fit enough to return from an ankle problem.Norwich City head coach Daniel Farke is still without a host of players. Max Aarons, Ralf Fahrmann, Onel Hernandez, Timm Klose, Tom Trybull, Mario Vrancic and Christoph Zimmermann are on the sidelines. This is their inaugural Premier League meeting and first in the top flight since 1976. The last time they met was in the third round of the FA Cup in January 2012 – Norwich won 4-1 at Carrow Road. Burnley have only lost one of their 17 home meetings with Norwich, a 5-3 defeat in April 2004.Everton vs Sheffield UnitedGoodison Park, LiverpoolSaturday, 21-09-2019 @5pmReferee: Simon HooperThis is their first meeting since a League Cup second-round tie in 2011, which Everton won 3-1. Sheffield United won both of their matches against Everton during the inaugural Premier League season in 1992-93 but are winless in their four subsequent encounters in the division. After a run of three top-flight wins at Goodison Park, the Blades have lost on their past two visits in August 1993 and October 2006.Everton midfielder Andre Gomes has again been ruled out due to the rib injury that also caused him to miss last weekend’s defeat to Bournemouth. Jean-Philippe Gbamin remains on the sidelines with a thigh problem.Sheffield United will be without the suspended Billy Sharp, while Mo Besic is ineligible to face his parent club. Callum Robinson is fully recovered from the minor hamstring injury that prevented him from starting against Southampton last weekend.Man City vs WatfordEtihad Stadium, ManchesterSaturday, 21-09-2019 @5pmReferee: Mike Dean Midfielder Fernandinho is expected to continue in central defence for Manchester City in the absence of injured pair John Stones and Aymeric Laporte. The Brazilian played at center-half in the 3-0 victory over Shakhter Donetsk in City’s mid-week Champions League fixture. Phil Foden could be back after missing the trip to play Shakhtar Donetsk because of illness.Watford will again be without defender Craig Cathcart due to a thigh injury. Captain and striker Troy Deeney remains on the sidelines with a knee problem, while fellow striker Isaac Success is also unavailable.Watford have lost 11 successive matches against Manchester City in all competitions, conceding 38 goals, and are winless in 16 since a 1-0 victory in the second tier back in March 1989. A 12th consecutive defeat would represent Watford’s worst run against any opponent, surpassing the 11 straight losses they had against Manchester United between 1987 to 2016. City have scored 25 times and conceded just three in their last six matches against the Hornets, including a 6-0 victory in last season’s FA Cup final.City were behind for 72 minutes against Norwich last weekend – they only trailed for a total of 132 minutes in the whole of the 2018-19 Premier League season. Eight of the last 11 league goals they have conceded have been via set pieces. They are on a club Premier League record run of scoring in 27 consecutive fixtures. Sergio Aguero has scored 10 goals in seven appearances against Watford in all competitions, including hat-tricks in January 2014 in the FA Cup and September 2017 in the league. Aguero has scored in his last six Premier League appearances – the last player to score in seven in a row was Romelu Lukaku for Everton in December 2015. He is one goal short of becoming only the third player to have scored 100 Premier League goals in one stadium after Thierry Henry with 114 at Highbury and Wayne Rooney with 101 at Old Trafford.Newcastle United vs Brighton and Hove AlbionSt. James Park, Newcastle upon TyneSaturday, 21-09-2019 @7:30pmReferee: Martin AtkinsonAndy Carroll is fit to make his first appearance for Newcastle since his summer return to the North East, and will likely be joined by Allan Saint-Maximin who has also shaken off a knock. Sean Longstaff is still a week away from recovery. For Brighton, Marvin Montoya has recovered from an illness and will be ready to return to the line-up, with left-back Bernardo having an outside chance of joining him in the squad. Leon Balogun and Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who both returned from international duty nursing minor injuries, should be fit. Leandro Trossard remains injured. After winning home and away against Brighton when both sides were promoted from the Championship in 2016-17, Newcastle haven’t won any of their Premier League meetings with the Seagulls (D2 L2). Only against West Ham (5) do Brighton have a better unbeaten record in the Premier League than they do against Newcastle. There have been just four goals scored in the four previous Premier League meetings between Newcastle and Brighton, with neither side scoring more than once in any match. Brighton have only lost two of their last 10 league games against Newcastle (W4 D4 L2), with both defeats coming in the 2016-17 Championship season, when the two sides were promoted to the Premier League. Brighton have won just one of their last 14 Premier League matches (W1 D5 L8), scoring just eight goals and drawing a blank on eight occasions in the process. After winning five consecutive home Premier League games between January and March, Newcastle have only mustered one win in their last five at St. James’ Park (W1 D1 L3). Newcastle have the lowest Expected Goals value in the Premier League this season (3.52), while only Crystal Palace (4) have recorded fewer ‘big chances’ than the Magpies (5). Steve Bruce is looking to avoid becoming only the second Newcastle manager to fail to win his opening three Premier League games at St. James’ Park after Steve McClaren.Crystal Palace vs WolvesSelhurst Park, LondonSunday, 22-09-2019 @4pmReferee: Scot AttwellDetails to follow shortly West Ham United vs Man UnitedLondon Stadium, LondonSunday, 22-09-2019 @6pmReferee: Anthony TaylorDetails to follow shortly Arsenal vs Aston VillaEmirates Stadium, LondonSunday, 22-09-2019 @6:30pmReferee: Jonathan MossDetails to follow shortly Chelsea vs LiverpoolStamford Bridge, LondonSunday, 22-09-2019 @6:30pmReferee: Michael OliverDetails to follow shortlyComments
Saturday Night Live might not be as funny as it once was, but last weekend the show recaptured some of the old magic on a very modern subject. A brilliant sketch hilariously pointed out the hypocrisy and navel gazing of the entitled first-world pundits who write about mobile technology. If you haven’t seen it, you definitely want to watch it now…This sketch cut pretty close to home, even naming names of some of ReadWriteWeb’s competitors – though frankly it could have been any of us. My two favorite jokes in the piece?1. The classic Chinese satrical dance.2. “Diabetes.”Do you think the sketch was fair, or did it go too far? Or maybe it didn’t go far enough? Skipper Shahid Afridi led from the front with a scintillating five-wicket haul to help Pakistan notch up a 46-run victory over Canada in a Group A World Cup match in Colombo on Thursday. ScoreInspired by Afridi’s exploits, Pakistan shot out Canada for 138 in 42.5 overs after folding for a modest 184 batting first at the R Premadasa Stadium.Afridi, who grabbed 5-16 and 4-34 against Kenya and Sri Lanka respectively in their last two matches, became the first bowler to take three consecutive four-wicket hauls in World Cup history.Apart from dismissing Ashish Bagai (16), Jimmy Hansra (43), Rizwan Cheema (4), Tyson Gordon (9) and Harvir Baidwan (0) in his 10 overs, Afridi also produced a brilliant direct throw to sent back Balaji Rao at the fag end of the match.Chasing 185 to win, Canada were off to a disastrous start as they slipped to 44 for three in 17.1 overs. Zubin Surkari (27) and Jimmy Hansra (43) added a fighting 60-run partnership to lift Canada to 104.But with Saeed Ajmal trapping Surkari in front of wicket in the 34th over and Afridi taking two wicket in consecutive deliveries meant Pakistan was back in the game.Afridi first sent Rizwan Cheema’s off stump for a walk with his googly and then disturbed HS Baidwan’s woods with his quick ripper to reduce Canada to 114 for seven. The skipper returned again to dismiss TG Gordon with Wahab Riwaz taking a superb catch to complete his second five wicket haul here.Earlier, Canada had conjured up hopes of an upset when their bowlers bowled out the former champions Pakistan for 184 in their World Cup group A match.advertisementPakistan found the disciplined Canada attack to hot to handle as, after opting to bat, they lost wickets at regular intervals to be finally bundled out inside the 200-run mark in 43 overs. If not for the 73-run fifth wicket stand between Misbah-ul-Haq (37) and Umar Akmal (48), Pakistan could have folded up for a lesser total as they lost their last six wickets for just 44 runs.India-born medium-pacer Harvir Baidwan was the pick of the Canada bowlers with figures of three for 35 runs while Hansra (2/23), Cheema (2/33) and Rao (2/50) snared two wickets apiece to spell Pakistan’s doom.Even though there were no demons in the pitch, Pakistan were off to a shaky start as the 1992 champions lost their first four batsmen for just 67 runs after electing to bat.Opener Mohammad Hafeez started positively as he picked up Henry Osinde for special treatement in his first and innings second over, spanking the right-arm pacer for back-to-back boundaries. But Osinde took his revenge in the first delivery of his next over, trapping Hafeez lbw but not before the batsman went for the review which went against him.Baidwan struck the second blow for Canada in the ninth over, dismissing Ahmed Shehzad caught by Gordon at mid-on.Baidwan then trapped Younis Khan lbw in the 13th over with a full length delivery that was titlting in towards middle and leg, prompting the batsman to go for another unsuccessful review. And then two overs later, Kamran Akmal too departed caught at the backward point region by Nitish Kumar off Cheema to ensure a dream start for Canada. But then came in ever-reliable Misbah and together with young Umar Akmal, he steadied the rocking Pakistani ship with the 73-run stand. After the shocking start, the duo took their time to settle in as they mostly dealt with ones and twos with occasional boundaries in between during their 117-ball partnership. But after all the hardwork when it was time for Misbah and Umar Akmal to accelerate, leg-spinner Rao inflicted twin blows, dismissing both the set batsmen with the Pakistan scoreboard reading 165 for six.Rao first trapped Umar plumb in front of the wicket just two short of his half-century and then four overs later he accounted for Misbah, caught by captain Asish Bagai behind the stumps.Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi (20) and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq failed to live upto their reputation with the former becoming Cheema’s third victim. The lower-order did very little to help Pakistan’s cause as they lost their last four batsmen within a span of three runs.

RODDICKTON, N.L. — A Newfoundland mayor says dozens of stranded seals are causing increasing havoc in her small town, and federal fisheries officials need to step in.Roddickton Mayor Sheila Fitzgerald says the animals have been blocking roads, driveways and doors and residents are unable to move them because it is illegal to touch marine mammals. She says two seals were struck by cars Tuesday.Fitzgerald says the group of about 40 seals are becoming hungry, tired and are crying out.Town council is formally requesting that the Fisheries Department return the animals to the ocean at the edge of the frozen inlet that has trapped the animals in the area.Fitzgerald said a few seals are usually spotted near town every year but she’s never seen such a large group, and the animals’ condition is disturbing for residents whose hands are tied if they want to help. The Fisheries Department issued a statement earlier this week saying the situation was being monitored and reminding people not to touch the animals, and said an updated statement would likely be coming on Wednesday. The province’s seal harvest is highly regulated, requiring a licence and specific tools for humanely harvesting the animals. The Canadian Press
